Smart home assessments for existing homes

A Naples Top Tech system assessment identifies what is installed, how it performs and what should be retained, repaired or upgraded.

Start here when you have inherited a system, lost contact with an installer or reached the point where recurring problems need a clear explanation. An assessment also helps when the system works but no longer matches how you use the home.

The review begins with your concerns and an agreed scope. We identify the equipment, check accessible connections and observe the behavior of the systems being assessed.

What do we check during an assessment?

How are the network and Wi-Fi working?

We review the router, switches, access points and accessible cabling relevant to the problem. We check connectivity in the agreed areas and look at equipment placement, coverage and configuration. The investigation separates issues inside the home from symptoms that require the internet provider's attention.

Are the controls operating the right equipment?

We identify controllers, keypads, remotes and touchscreens, along with available software and programming access. We compare the requested action with what happens in the room. That helps distinguish a control or integration issue from a problem with the equipment itself.

How do the lighting and shades behave?

We review the agreed lighting circuits, scenes, keypads and shade functions. Checks focus on response, dimming behavior, labels, grouping and the relationship between the native controls and any integrated app. Fixture, driver, module and motor compatibility guide the next steps.

Are audio, video and cameras working as expected?

We check the selected sources, displays, audio zones and controls. Camera checks can cover agreed views, live images, recording playback and authorized access. Seeing a live picture alone does not confirm that useful recordings are being retained.

Is the system understandable and serviceable?

We review accessible rack organization, ventilation, power equipment, labeling and available records. We identify the accounts and configuration information needed for the agreed work. Missing access or concealed wiring is recorded as an unresolved item, with the next investigative step explained.

What do you get from the assessment?

You get findings that separate observed problems from questions that still need testing. The recommendations explain what can remain, what needs attention and which optional improvements support your priorities.

The findings provide a practical basis for deciding:

  • Which issues affect everyday operation and should be addressed first.
  • Which existing components are suitable for continued use.
  • Whether repair, an in-place upgrade or a platform conversion fits the problem.
  • What further access, testing or coordination is needed before work can be defined.
  • Which improvements can be considered later without undermining the first phase.

The assessment scope establishes the depth of testing and the documentation to be provided. Findings then inform a separate repair or upgrade proposal where further work is needed.

Does an assessment mean replacing the whole system?

No. Replacement decisions follow condition, compatibility, support availability and your goals. Existing wiring, speakers, displays, controls or other components can remain when they fit the proposed work.

Lutron RadioRA 3 offers wireless retrofit options, while HomeWorks supports wired and wireless designs. Existing-system upgrades still require a component-by-component review. A familiar brand name does not make every generation of equipment interchangeable.

NTT has completed in-place upgrades and conversions between automation or lighting-control brands. A conversion can involve controllers, modules, interfaces, programming and scene reconstruction as well as hardware. The assessment identifies the practical options before that scope is proposed.

Can the assessment fee roll into an upgrade?

Some or all of the assessment fee may roll into subsequent upgrade work, depending on what, if anything, needs upgrading. Any applicable credit is confirmed for the specific project before that work is approved. An assessment does not commit you to an upgrade or guarantee a credit.

What should you have ready for the visit?

Share a short list of problems, the affected rooms and when each issue occurs. Gather available plans, equipment records and information about changes made before the problem began. Arrange access to the relevant equipment and authorized account access needed for the agreed checks.

What else do homeowners ask about assessments?

Can you assess equipment installed by another company?

We begin by identifying the system and the access available to inspect or configure it. The equipment, condition and manufacturer requirements determine the practical service options.

Is troubleshooting or repair automatically included?

The assessment scope defines the checks and any corrective work included in the visit. Repairs, replacement parts and additional investigation need an agreed scope before that work proceeds.

Can an assessment help when there is no obvious failure?

Yes. It can establish what you have, explain how the systems work together and identify limits that affect planned additions. That is useful before adding shades, expanding audio or changing the control platform.
